My name is Toby Tottle. I started spinning wool by hand in Wales fifteen years ago. I love the independence of being able to make something myself from a fully sustainable, abundant, natural resource using centuries-old techniques.
My experience ranges from replica Ice Age spindles to Viking vertical warp-weighted looms to Medieval spinning wheels. I was also lucky enough to train under Hugh Jones at Knockando Woolmill in North East Scotland in the use of the 1870s Self-Acting Spinning Mule and carding set. See article on the right.
I source wool directly from farms according to the qualities of different breeds, and process it entirely by hand.
Nowadays we want local, we want sustainable, we want to slow down with hand crafts that benefit our mental health and we want products that are made one at a time, around the corner by individual makers.
I do this in order to keep that tradition alive.
